Benny Dai: We should pay for democracy.

--By [Wu Wing Kiu] 2013年10月8日 (二) 17:53 (UTC)

Benny Dai Yiu Ting, associate Professor of Hong Kong University’s department of Law, has restated the purpose of the dinner party fundraising for “Occupy Central”, which is letting people to know that they should pay for democracy.

Donators have to give out either $1500 or $5000 to the “celebrities’ dinner party”. Being questioned about the donations’ amount, Dai said in Shue Yan University yesterday that we could not fight for democracy without giving out anything.

“We would not set any limit for donations,” he added, “Two dollars donated by a poor man may be more vital than one thousand dollars given out by a rich man.”

Other than donations, he thought that deliberation days starting from last two months can enhance an environment and culture for people to express their own views, and thus to practice their rights to influence decisions.

“Deliberation day is our weapon, though, we have no enemy.” He thought.

He also stated that the tension of a united social movement like occupying Central would have power to negotiate for people’s will to interpret the constitution (Basic Law).

“I had not ever imagined about what would happen to occupying Central right now.” He concluded, “There is uncertainty in this movement, that’s why it has its own life and tension now.”
