(Your lead was good but your explanation later on did not quite tell the reason why there is a huge demand for documentary in mainland China. I understood the part about the need to record the rapid development of China visually but as to the media gateway part, I found it not making sense, at least to me. I have to give you credit for bringing up the story of "My Way" which clearly demonstrated the interaction of the director and the place of the story.)

Non-profit organization CNEX provides funding to Chinese filmmakers to shoot documentary. Ada Li, the foundation manager of CNEX, says there is a huge demand for documentary in mainland China.

Li explained the phenomenon in a lecture held in Shue Yan University yesterday. She believed, media is the gateway for people to know the things happened out of the society they belong. Nowadays, people in China are desired to learn the things that they do not know before. Therfore, documentaries are popular in China. Also, Li thought that documentaries are the good platform to record visual history, when Chinese society is rapidly developed now.

One of the CNEX funded director Cheuk Cheung expressed that documentaries can also let people to understand more about the place they are living. Cheuk filmed a documentary about traditional Cantonese opera called My Way. ' I started to ask why the popularity of Cantonese opera decline in Hong Kong nowadays,' Cheuk said.
