The government had to keep balance between heritage preservation and commercial interest,

said Ms. S. Alice Mong, the executive director of Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK).

“It’s not for me to judge or criticize the decision of the government,” said Mong. There

were some criticisms of the commercialization of declared monuments in Hong Kong. Mong said

that the government had to balance its budget.

Mong said she did balanced commercial interests with the mission of ASHK, which was educating

the public.

“We do have a stall and a very popular restaurant on site,” said Mong. “This is because our

centre is non-profit and we need to run it.”

ASHK ran over 180 programmes last year while one-third of its profits came from renting out

some areas of the centre. Other profits came from fund raising, especially from the Jockey Club.
