With the growing global status, China has become one of the most concerned countries in the world. As she is able to bring large effect to the world, agencies from different parts of the world sent journalists to China. However, China is a well-known country that has lots of restrictions on news. James Pomfret, South China correspondent, said at the general assembly held by HKSYU today that journalists shouldn’t give up even they faced obstacles during their reporting.

He said that mainland China doesn’t have the freedom of reporting news. Journalists are not welcomed to investigate and report news relating to China. James said that he had seen journalists being punched, kicked, or being imprisoned during their investigation in China. For him, he said that he had been imprisoned before in China as well, and this shows that it is very hard to report news in China. However, he said, Hong Kong is different from China that there are lots of freedom provided. Therefore he said that local journalists should enjoy their freedom and fulfill their responsibility to make in-depth reporting on news in China.

To report news in China successfully, he said that journalists must have strategies to escape from the obstructions by Chinese government. He said that in order to conceal his identity of a journalists, he usually dress and act like normal people unless he is being obstructed by the government. He said that there are actually many news-worthy stories in China. To report this kind of news, he suggested that journalists should repackage the news story, including using another angle in reporting to lessen the sensitivity.

Reviewing the freedom of press in Hong Kong, he said that there is a big difference in between Hong Kong and China. With the implementation of basic law, freedom of press is being guaranteed by the law in Hong Kong. Journalists in Hong Kong are able to report news stories whatever they want with the only requirement that the stories reported must be true. He said that this high level of freedom in journalism is not offered in every country. Therefore journalists in Hong Kong should cherish the freedom they get to report the news of China.

With his experience of being obstructed by the Chinese government during reporting, he said that he hopes the government could give journalists more news freedom. He said that with his identity of a foreign journalist, he already has more protection than those in mainland China. Therefore, he hoped that Chinese government can stop using different ways to control people’s speech and media’s reports.
