Freedom of the Press Does not Exist in China

Andy Ngai, Deputy Chief Editor of Hong Kong Economic Journal, said since Xi Jin-ping, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, took office, the freedom of the press have been more tighten in China.
Ngai has worked in media field for years in China, “there is no freedom of the press in China from day one,” said he. A question raised about News Ethics Committee, he then pointed out that this is used for further tightening the news reporting in China. “Seeing the rising number of offices of the News Ethics Committee, we can imagine the situation of the media,” he mentioned.
In addition, he used WeChat (a popular social communicational app in China) as an example to interpret the danger of inappropriate speech or run illegal gatherings via this app. He explained, “I am worried about WeChat as the Chinese government thinks that the users always spread wrong messages or news in it. No matter how much does WeChat value, the government can destroy it anyway.”
Last but not least, he also commented the freedom of the press in Hong Kong. “Depends on the bosses (main investors) of the news organization, if the bosses do not care, then no freedom,” he said.
