James Pomfret, South China Correspondent of Reuters, was invited to the general assembly of Journalism and Communication Department at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Pomfret said Hong Kong’s media is lucky to have freedom of press which we should cherish very much. He said the Chinese government should listen to all views (((in order to in line with international.)))

Freedom of press is rare

James Pomfret proposed that with the protection of law, Hong Kong’s media is free to obtain any kind of information, as well as to write news. Pomfret pointed out a lot of excellent news reporting in the mainland are not publicly issued and known due to government’s strong prohibition. He stressed that freedom of press which Hong Kong’s media has been enjoying is not inevitable. “Hong Kong’s freedom of press is somehow amazing! It is greater than many countries in the world,” Pomfret said. ((ok))

Pomfret shared his reporting experience in the mainland that it is hard to collect news in the mainland since there are too many limitations. He recalled, "I was prohibited to enter into a village for interview, also I was being tracked and monitored." He reminded reporters should never give up whenever they encounter obstruction. They instead should be sensitive, careful and smart enough to find ways to get rid of the eyes and ears of the government. Reporters should try their best to reveal and report the truth. "Fighting for the truth is always not easy but we must," Pomfret said.

As an international organization, Pomfret believes that Reuters can survive in the Mainland. "Although the Chinese government are dissatisfied with us, it is very difficult for her to drive us out. The Chinese government has to respect us and allow our existence just like how she respects Google. It is difficult to kick away the world-class institutions,” Pomfret said.
