Hong Kong government should take Singapore as an good example to develop the plan of ‘smart city’ , says a CEO of technology company.

“Although Hong Kong accepted driverless technology now, but it still had room for improvement compared with Singapore,”, said Stanley Ng, who is the CEO and founder of MapKing.

Ng think the key of Singapore succeed to become a smart city is due to strong government and a good environment.

“There were only two ways to meet officials such as the Secretary and the Director in Hong Kong. One way is the officials received the petition letters in demonstration, other ways is meet them in the spring festival or some big event. However, officials in Singapore will personally meet citizens and communicate development issues with them,” Ng said.

“The Singapore government always invited experts from different countries to discuss and share opinions on smart city issues, in order to speed up the development,” Ng said.

Although Singapore have a well development of ‘smart city’ and it was a valuable reference. However, Ng said that some things are allowed in Singapore system but not in Hong Kong system.

“Singapore had a policy of introducing foreign workers, it can inhale more new technologies and knowledge into Singapore. However, Hong Kong did not established such regulation because of protected the interests of local people,” Ng said.

Regarding the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the problem of small circulation of information in the Mainland will hinder Hong Kong from becoming a smart city. Ng said that is one of the concerns.

“The mainland government may conceal some of the information or problems, there are large restrictions of message circulate. It will cause some problems when Hong Kong cooperate with mainland,” Ng said.
