Hong Kong movie director should turn their sight to Mainland

By Tse Chi Chung,11 February 2014

Director Wong Jing said at Hong Kong Shue Yan University that Hong Kong movies are no longer the best in Asia. He urged Hong Kong people to grasp the chance of the development of Mainland, otherwise Hong Kong movies will be less and less competitive.

Wong said that Hong Kong people, especially those who work in media industry, should abandon the sense of privilege and absorb knowledge and technology from other countries to regain the leading position in Asia movie field. He said that Hong Kong people should focus on Mainland market, which has 1.3 billion potential audiences, instead of keeping Hong Kong mindset to produce a movie. He added that, it is not surprising that the production budget of a Mainland movie costs 300 to 400 million, while only 10 million for Hong Kong movie. Thus, if audiences hope to watch high quality movies, they should not hold a hostile perspective to Hong Kong-Mainland-cooperate movies.

He said that Hong Kong people usually look at Mainland with a discriminative perspective, such as using “locust” to describe Mainland people. He said labels such as “lack of social morality” and “low culture level” are already out-of-date, so he urged Hong Kong people use a fairer way to look at Mainland and its related things.
