Hong Kong should pay more attention to STEM education

Hong Kong should catch up the pace of learning computer coding as it has a broad prospects for development, says a founder of ICanCode.


Moni Law Yin Ling, a founder of ICanCode, she said that in many developed countries, computer code learning has even been included in compulsory courses in school. However, computer code learning is not valued in Hong Kong even it has a broad prospects for development.


“The importance of learning computer coding is same as learning languages like Chinese and English. Computer coding should becomes compulsory in the educational curriculum in Hong Kong.” Law said.


Therefore, Law founded ICanCode in 2016 to promote STEM education, which can let Hong Kong students explore more about coding and programming.


“Actually I am very optimistic about STEM entering the Hong Kong campus. However, the promotion of STEM education needs to be strengthened.” Law said.


The Hong Kong Government has a lot of propagate about STEM education in recent years. However, the popularity effect of it is still unsatisfactory. Law said it is related to many factors.


“For example, the traditional courses are arranged so intensive and the knowledge of teachers is not enough to let STEM education hard to have a well development in Hong Kong..” Law said.


Law compared the situation of Stem education in Korea, some kindergartens in South Korea have already introduced computer code learning, laying the foundation for further study in the future and also cultivated children's interest in coding.


“I am absolutely support technology can be included in education as soon as possible. As long as Hong Kong is willing to promote it, STEM will provide greater opportunities for the future of Hong Kong technology.” Law said.


Many people thought computer coding was difficult to learn, Law said that with the advancement in internet, we could learn coding by assessing to free applications like Full Scratch and Google CS.
