Fears over the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) are unfounded because like any other tool it could be an instrument of change or a lethal weapon, says an expert.

     
“Everything we have invented can be used to destroy. Cars can kill people but we can’t live without cars,” said Ken Lee, technical manager of the VIPS Guangzhou Research Centre for China’s largest flash sale website, www.vip.com.

 
In September 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin asked the head of tech firm Yandex, “When will AI eat us?” and he said the country that made a breakthrough in AI technology would be a world leader. 


Entrepreneur and SpaceX chief executive posted a comment on Twitter that said, “AI could be humanity’s greatest existential threat, this time by starting a third world war.” He also described AI as more dangerous than North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un.


Lee, whose centre mainly focuses on virtual reality (VR) and AI applications and research, disagreed with the view that the development of AI will destroy human civilisation.


He also said AI would replace people in different occupations one day. “What if machines could imitate our unique skills and even do better than us,” said Lee. 


He talked about the use of AI in autonomous vehicles as an example. The AI programming in an autonomous can calculate and find the fastest route to a destination, he said.


Lee said an AI system in a machine could be smarter than a human, as it could learn quickly, and make fast and accurate calculations.


He said some professionals such as journalists and lawyers would be replaced by AI after several decades. 


But Lee agreed that developments in AI had yet to realise its full potential, especially when it came to emotional limits.
