Learn From Copying

Reporter:--095124 楊秀文 YEUNG, SAU MAN 2012年4月10日 (二) 23:13 (UTC)

TV shows produced in Hong Kong are always criticized as copies of shows in foreign countries, for example a game show called The Weakest Disappears was a Cantonese version of The Weakest Link in UK.

About lack of creativity of shows, the Creative Director of NOW Lai Tak Kin said it is usual to emulate others’ creative.

“This is not copying but learning from others’ works. This is a respectful action,” he said.

He continued there are many communications between production teams of different countries. They shared information about cultures and behaviors of different places. Mostly they thought of similar ideas from there.

“When we decided game shows, we thought about the most important moment, for example, a highly concentrated facial expression is one the most valuable moment that we had to catch,” Lai said.

He said a good game should have a learning value, wherever it was brought. “It is not a surprise to have same game in different languages. It only proved that this is a good game,” he said.

Finally, he concluded that at the same time we imitate from others, they are also learning from our original creations.
