Wen Wei Pao and Ta Kung Pao are the minorities in newspaper industry of Hong Kong with their left-winged political stance. Chau Yick, the former deputy general manager of Wen Wei Pao, said at the general assembly held by HKSYU today that these kind of newspapers should be closed down as they have already lost their direction in the market.

The two left-wing newspapers, Wen Wei Pao and Ta Kung Pao are firstly published before the establishment of People’s Republic of China. Chau said that they were published at that time to act as the communication channel between Chinese government and the general public. They are mainly used to spread ideas of the communist party. However, he said that with the widely use of Internet nowadays, message that are planned to spread out to public can now through the use of Internet. Therefore, it is not necessary to keep operating these left-wing newspapers.

He said that Wen Wei Pao has get lost in the market at present and can’t find their direction of development. He said that after the June Fourth Incident, many journalists are left. Replacing them are the people from mainland China, as a result, most people of the editing and management department are speaking in Putonghua. Since the happening of the incident, he said, Wen Wei Pao hasn’t communicate with other newspapers and finally lead to the lost of direction in the market.

Not only losing the direction, Chau said, Wen Wei Pao has also lose its original style of news reporting. He said that it is trying to follow the style of Oriental Daily and Apple Daily which are the popular newspapers in Hong Kong. He said that this can be seen from the design of the Wen Wei Pao nowadays, which is becoming more colorful than before, trying to attract readers visually.

Chau said that Wen Wei Pao is now operating with the money supplied by the Chinese government, which means the closure of Wen Wei Pao can save money for the government. However, he said there might be some reasons behind the two newspapers which hindered them to close them down. He took Ta Kung Pao as an example, stating that as it has a long history, it is embarrassing to close it down. He said that historical value explains why the left-wing newspapers can still exist in the market even government no longer use them as the channel of communication.
