Loh Chan: Hong Kong needs more program for the elderly

Reporter: Simon Hung Tuesday, 17 Sept, 2013

Loh Chan, The Chief executive officer of Digital Broadcasting Corporation (DBC), claimed that Hong Kong should have more radio program for the elderly There is a channel in DBC which target audience are the elderly, and most contents are about the Chinese drama. Loh admitted that the radio price maybe hard for old people to buy, since some may not want to buy radio device for more than $100. 'We may cooperate with some organization that focus on the elderly, perhaps sell the radio for cheap prices, even give them for free.' Loh said. There are just few program in Hong Kong is specifically for the elderly. 'There are more than 1million people who are over 65 years old in hk.' Loh said.

'There are one elderly every 7 man now, but there will be one elderly

every 4 man in 20 years later.' Loh predicted. Loh also think that since the life of man is longer, 65 years old people may still have about 20 year life, so the mindset must be changed. 'some may even enjoying their retired life, they may still buy the digital radio device.' Loh said It seems to be the trend to focus on the elderly. The experience from foreign countries is good for hk to learn and they even have mature programming format specifically for the elderly. Hong Kong don't have great program for the elderly, that's why DBC may want to extend this area.

The new DBC spent about 20 millions dollars for set up digital radio device in the taxi and minibus. According to Loh, it's more convenient for driver if they are listening from digital broadcasting, as there are quick photo upload in the new digital radio device. Driver could know exactly about places that traffic accident occurred.
