Teledifusão de Macau (TDM), the Macau public broadcaster, is ready for a revolution – showing a brand new image and news production for her audiences, said João Leong Kam Chun, the managing director of TDM, yesterday.

Leong pointed out that it is difficult to run a television company in Macau. The main reason is because of the two strong opponents from Hong Kong – TVB and ATV. “Macau citizens usually watch TVB or ATV, putting TDM at the last priority. It seems like we were bullied by Hong Kong’s media,” Leong said.

After discussion with his colleagues, Leong figured out that they could not easily produce high quality drama or commentary show as those in Hong Kong in a short period of time, so they planned to have a reformation towards their news team.

“No people can live without knowing what are happening in their city and we understand that is a critical way for us to survive, thus we focus more on developing news production – especially for Macau citizens,” said Leong.

For the future planning, Leong claimed that TDM will vigorously develop news programs with local news and also international news, creating their own style of news reporting. He hoped the news program quality can chase near those in Hong Kong and step-by-step develop a formal news station.

TDM has chosen several methods to encourage journalists and reporters produce better quality news, such as rewarding the best rating news, systematizing the news department – offering promotion opportunities for journalists, encouraging journalists cover the story overseas, for example interview in London, Russia and Taiwan, which attracted many journalists applying. Leong noted these are all effective ways to reform the company, and which has successfully raised the rating of TDM.

Leong pointed out that there is a huge outflow of talented reporters within the Macau media industry, which is a hurdle for the company to reform. “The Macao television has almost become the local media training courses. Many local universities journalism students would go for internship in TV stations before graduation. After working for one or two years, they got more in-depth understanding about the local issues, government agencies or other media often invite them to work in their company. ”

In order to strengthen their competitive power, Leong said that employees only got basic salary, then pay according to their program quality and TV program rating.
