Development of television broadcasting industry in China has been improving a lot in recent year, which attracts many artists to participate in their variety shows. Senior television broadcasting producers said today in the General Assembly held by HKSYU that mainland shows are attractive to artists due to the resources they have in production and the quantity of audience they can reach.

Ho Lai-chuen, vice chairman of PCCW, said that the production schedules of mainland variety shows are more professional than Hong Kong. Different from Hong Kong which only offers half an hour to rehearse the rundown of program, they require artists to arrive a day earlier in order to do the rehearsal. “As there is only a little time for production and there is insufficient preparation time for artists, the shows are not as attractive as those in mainland China,” said Wilson Chin, a well-known executive producer of TV programs in Hong Kong.

Ho added that the higher quality of mainland variety shows can be explained by their devotion of time and resources into a show. He took the show “Strict Come Dancing”, a dancing competition within artists in mainland China and Hong Kong as example. He said that the show requires competitors to stay in mainland and practice from 8am to 10pm, which is impossible to be seen in Hong Kong. “Neither television broadcasting companies or artists is willing to devote that much time into a program,” Ho said.

Chin said that producers in mainland now target their market on teenagers; therefore they are willing to invite famous artists to show up in their programs to increase their program rating by paying large amount of money. Hong Kong artist Wong He said that he cost of inviting him to a show is around 100 thousand although he is not famous. He added that programs in mainland China are more attractive to artists as they can reach large number of audience. He said that participating in a variety show that might have seven hundred million audience is attractive to artists as “your next boss might be within these audiences.” He said that this explains why artists are eager to participate in shows in mainland China.
