Mainland relaxes film manpower restrictions, examine still hinders the local film

[Ada To, 23thTuesday April 2019] Mainland relaxes film manpower restrictions but review still hinders Hong Kong film development. Mobile phone filming into a new trend.

Consultant Director of Next Digital Incubation and Filmmaker, AU Man-Kit Jevons have a talk at Hong Kong Shue Yan University Weekly Meeting taking about movie industry.

The Beijing authorities have earlier agreed to five restrictions on the liberalization of Hong Kong films into the mainland market, including the removal of restrictions on Hong Kong people's participation in film production in the Mainland.

“The screening of the mainland needs to pass the review of the Mainland Central Propaganda Department and obtain funding from the Mainland, which means that the content of the film should be adjusted accordingly,” he said.

He asked, “Is there anything that Hong Kong citizens will support?” It is relatively difficult to make Hong Kong-flavored films. Au said, “The production cost is much lower than that of mainland films and it is difficult to estimate the taste of Hong Kong audiences.”

Jevons said, “Every ticket tells investors that you want to see Hong Kong movies too!” He expressed his hope for the Hong Kong film industry and encouraged Hong Kong audiences to support Hong Kong-made films.

He said, “Mobile phone shooting is a new possibility for the film industry. Nowadays, the effect of mobile phone shooting can be comparable to the quality of professional equipment.” The movie "High Flying Bird", which was shot entirely on smartphones, was released this year. Not long ago, it was regarded as a gimmick, but now people's views are beginning to change.

“The most important thing for people engaged in the film industry to achieve results is whether they can stick to what they want to do. Everyone can find of their own possibilities and eventually get a lot of success in the creative process,” Jevons said.
