HKSYU, 22 Jan - Mark Lee Po On, the executive director and group general manager of TVB, gave a talk at Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday. He recommend that government should consider seriously about the approval of the new free-to-air TV license.

CTI, which is led by Ricky Wong, applied for free-to-air TV license in 2012, but did not get it until now. Lee indicated that TVB is not afraid of competition and will continually concern about the quality of TV program. It’s widely acknowledged that the main income of free-to-air TV station is advertising. And TVB occupied 2.8 billion HKD among total 3 billion HKD in the past year. So that he thought TVB is competitive and deserve to be survived.

“The broadcasting industry has high standards and many regulations,” said Lee. Broadcasters should assume more social responsibilities, since their programs could affect public interest. He pointed out that fair competition do encourage the advancement of the industry, but unreasonable competition could destroy it. That’s why TVB appeal for judicial review over the approving the new free-to-air TV license.

Apart from that, Lee said,”it is suitable for Hong Kong to have 2 free-to-air TV station.” Commercial Television closed down in 1978, which proves that Hong Kong is appropriate for 2 free-to-air TV station coexist only. He urged government to reconsider the approval of new free-to-air TV license, and take TVB’s opinion
