New Form of Creation of Videos - Short and Interesting, said an Experienced Director

An audience is not just only an audience, which can also be a creator to contribute ideas to videos, and share to those who are interested, said an experienced director.

“Tik Tok provides a variety of videos and musicals, which can stimulus creativity from different users,” said Patton Chen, the planning director of ByteDance Ltd and Tik Tok (South China).

Chen was the planning director of Tik Tok, which was established on September 2016. The application was a platform that mainly focused on younger generation and provided opportunities for them to create their own style of videos. Tik Tok had around 600 million active users in 2018.

Founded in Mainland China, Tik Tok was opened to more than 150 countries and with 75 languages. In Hong Kong, there was 200 million viewership daily, with four-tenth of users were teenagers. The application’s active users surged for six times within a year after releasing more functions, said Chen.

With the advancement in technology, artificial intelligence was applied in the application. Providing functions such as Beauty and Sound Effects, the application became more popular. In China, there were around 250 million users using Tik Tok every day, Chen said.

“Our use of artificial intelligence helps to find out users’ favourite videos, so as to provide them recommendation and they can receive more information,” Chen added.

Based on users’ habits, Tik Tok made a lot of amendments to attract more users. Around half of mobile phone’s users preferred using their smartphones in portrait, they allowed users to take videos in portrait. Furthermore, with a fast-pace life, short videos became common to deliver messages to audiences, said the experienced director.

“The distance for a mobile phone user to scroll their device is 100m, and they at most use eight seconds to choose whether they continue to watch the video. The key for the success of a short video is to attract eyeballs of audiences in the first second,” the experienced director said.

Tik Tok had strict checking systems to ensure all videos do not contain inappropriate contents. Firstly, their artificial intelligence system screened out most of the videos containing wrong contents. Then, the video team would randomly check around 20 to 30 percent of videos by their own, added the experienced director.

“We notice that some countries find our application harmful to users. we will try our best to create a safety environment to all users. I believe that Tik Tok is a channel for foreigners to understand more about China,” said Chen.
