There are three broadcasting companies which applied for the free-to-air television broadcasting licenses. The war between them had caused some of the laborers to flow from the existing free-to-air television broadcasters to those still waiting for approval. Famous script-writer and media columnist Lam Chiu Wing, nicknamed Superman by the public, commented on this phenomenon at the general assembly of Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday. He said that this would be a challenge to the existing broadcasters and push them to make improvements.

He stated that with the recent appearance of competitors would be a warning to the existing free-to-air television broadcasters, TVB and ATV. He said that if no competitors had appeared, their motivation for producing high-quality programs would have decreased. The incident of the three new companies entering the free-to-air television broadcasting industry can encourage them to produce better programs for the public.

Lam said that with more free-to-air television broadcasters in the broadcasting industry, people working in the industry are able to have more choices. They can exercise their potential by selecting the company that truly fits them. This can also help boost the quality of television program production.

One of the competitors who are applying for a license, City Telecom Limited, has been headhunting actors and behind the scene crews from TVB. Lam suggested that although crews in this industry would have more choices than before with the new competitors entering the market, they shouldn’t be too anxious in hopping to another broadcasting companies. Instead, they should first consider and observe the industry environment and situation before deciding if they would hop to the new companies or not. However, he said that for the entrants and people with few years experience, this would be a chance for them. He suggested that they grab and treasure the chance, as it might not appear frequently. If they missed this valuable chance, they might need to wait for a long period of time for the coming of the next chance.

Regarding the new companies that are planning to enter the television broadcasting industry, he commented that they might not have the ability to produce high quality programs in a short period of time. He stated that TVB, the biggest television broadcasting company in Hong Kong, has more resources than others, which enables it to produce better programs. As to the new competitors, he said that it is difficult for them to produce soap operas, especially those of high quality. In order to produce a soap opera, he said, a huge back up team is needed. It doesn’t only mean a need for shooting scenes, but also a need for behind the scenes crews and actors. Big companies are able to hire a large amount of actors and actresses. Some dramas, especially those that are highly invested to be the highlight drama of the year, include a mostly recognizable cast. Big companies are able to afford using outmoded stars as cast members or even freelance actors, while the small-scale companies are not. He said that with the lack of resources, it is hard for them to produce their own high quality soap operas.
