New directors created a new ambience of Hong Kong film industry even in low-cost budget, director of Trivisa says.

In last Hong Kong film award, new directors’ works increased to get past the qualifying round. New directors created a new ambience of Hong Kong film industry.

“Even it is low-cost production, it still be a high quality production and caused social responses,” a film director and writer, Jevons Au Man-kit said at Hong Kong Shue Yan University today.

He said due to low-cost budget and not enough government supports, new directors can only make movie within limited cost.

He took the recent Hong Kong movie, Still Human as an example said the budget of this film was only 3.2 millions.

The reason why budget limited because the director and writer of the film, Oliver Chan Siu-kuen was not famous, he added.

“As well as the male lead Anthony Wong Chau-sang didn’t charge any fees and wages. It is not much actors and directors can do so,” he said.

Au was graduated in Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and The film Trivisa worked by him got the Best Film of 2017 Hong Kong Film Award. He also made the film Distinction which about special educational needs (SEN) school students and teacher, and romance movie Romancing in Thin Air.

He said conditions for apply the Film Development Fund (FDF) were complex and lengthy, and the Film Development Council willing the movie can get valuable return .

The Film Development Fund (FDF) was first set up by the Government in 1999 to support projects conducive to the long-term development of the film industry in Hong Kong.

“I have never applied for the movie fund successfully, it is just about a subjective movie potential,” Au said.

Au said he was not willing to take the offers from mainland investors as he thought there may some of control from investors and the Chinese government.

The movie script must send to the related department for approval before filming in China, he added.

“I don't want to waste time on what I've done," he said.

He said last film attracted public’s attention about SEN children and the next step he want to make a film he never been touched.

"I am planning to film a Third Level film that probe into human nature as my next possibility of film," he said.
