No great sales decrease for HKEJ price increase
 
Chan Bak Tim, the executive editor of Hong Kong Economic Journal, attend the general assembly of Shue Yan University as a guest. Being asked about the price increase of HKEJ, Chan believed that, as newspaper is a daily necessary, any price changes will not lead to great decrease in sales volume. He also indicated that, the inflation in Hong Kong is related to the Quantitative Easing Policy established by the US.

Confronting a great inflation, discontent will be aroused whenever a price increase is announced. HKEJ currently established a price increase from HK$6 to HK$8, meaning a growth over 30%. A worry of a “price-increasing” trend is spread over the society. It is predicted that the sales volume of HKEJ will face an obvious decrease, with the increasing existence of competitors. Chan responded that, it is a common sense that if price increases, quantity demanded will decreases. However, as newspaper is a daily necessary, people “cannot” give up reading newspaper. That means its elasticity of demand is low. Therefore, a price change will not cause a great change in quantity demanded. He believed that, the price increase of HKEJ will not lead to a large decrease in its sales volume.

Although the unemployed rate in Hong Kong was remained at the same rate for three months, the inflation still cause adversely affect to people’s living standard. Chan indicated that the US established the QE3, which equals to printing out more cash in the market, making the market “flooding”. Additionally, US built a negative image to foreign countries, causing foreign economy was suffered from economic lose. This forced the other countries buy bonds from US. This means the US is saving its own economy by using the money from foreign countries. Hong Kong has adopted the linked exchange rate of US. However, she established a financial policy which is contrary to the one of the US. Hong Kong will suffer an great inflation.
