The development of Hong Kong Film has been declining for many years. The main reason was lack of market, no one would like to invest money in Hong Kong Film. Meanwhile, the government support was way not enough, therefore the market was keep narrowing.

“lack of market is because of no money for production,” Cheuk Pak Tong, the Professor Emeritus of Hong Kong Baptist University said at a Hong Kong Shue Yan University forum yesterday. Hong Kong Film used to be very popular in local, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. But nowadays, Hong Kong was the only market of Hong Kong Film, therefore no one would invest too much money on the production of Hong Kong film, which have huge impact on the development of Hong Kong Film, he said.

“Self-censorship is normal in Hong Kong Film,” he said. There was a huge argument when the movie “Ten Years” won the Best Film in 35th Hong Kong Film Awards, some people think that the content was too sensitive and shouldn’t won any award. The movie was only showed in few cinemas. Some people concern about the self-censorship problem in Hong Kong Film. Cheuk said most of the business in Hong Kong have benefit relationship with the business in mainland China, therefore Hong Kong businessman would not do anything against the rule of Chinese government, therefore self-censorship was understandable.

“The development of Hong Kong Film need government supports,” he said. Even though government funding has increased to one billion this year, they were not only used for production but all the film relevant events, such as the Film Festival, which was way not enough for boosting the development of the whole industry.

Cheuk Pak Tong is the Professor Emeritus of Hong Kong Baptist University and member of Hong Kong Film Development Council. He is also the writer of Hong Kong “New Wave Cinema” and the director of “Mariana, Mariana” and “The Security” etc.--165054 2019年2月19日 (二) 23:38 (CST)
