The largest food review website in Hong Kong, OpenRice.com, is planning to expand its business overseas and develop new app named “Open snap” in the future.

Ray Chung, founder of the Openrice.com, said at Shue Yan that OpenRice has started new food review websites for different countries, such as India, Malaysia and Philippines, making OpenRice an international brand.

Chung studied abroad for computer technology in university but then when he came back to Hong Kong, he became a journalist. The experience of reporting news acquires him the ability of thinking independently.

“I wrote the whole system of the website when I started OpenRice.com as it is my specialty,” he said.

Although there are dispute when internet users submit review but not published, Chung said they have their own screening system.

“The computer will screen all the food reviews submitted preliminarily, then approved by several editors,” he said.

Chung said it is easy to cause quarrel between restaurant owner and reviewer when they are both able to comment on the website. In order to prevent dispute, restaurant owner that sponsored OpenRice.com can only reply reviewer through email, but not published publicly on the website.

“We are not afraid if restaurants are mad at our website because our major income is from advertisements of bank, credit card and finance company,” he said.
