[March 20, 2012] The election of Hong Kong Chief Executive will be held on March 25, 2012. People from different social classes shared their expectation on the next chief executive. Peter Lai Hing Ling, honorary professor of department of politics and public administration from University of Hong Kong said today on the general assembly held by HKSYU that the most important task of the next CE is to tackle the aging problem in Hong Kong.

Mainland mothers are being concerned among Hong Kong citizens. However, Lai said that the most crucial problem that needs solution is the aging problem of Hong Kong. He said that population is the most important element in a country or nation as it highly related to the economic development of the region. The phenomenon of aging population will affect Hong Kong soon that this would be the most important task of the next chief executive.

He said that the recent committee is not effective in tackling the aging problem in Hong Kong. He said there is only one report released suggesting solutions for tackling the problem in 2002 by the committee. Therefore he suggested the next chief executive should focus more on the population policy.

Lai said that it is important to encourage political participation in the society in 21th century. He said that government should use a more open policy making process as policies can only run smoothly with the participation of the public. He said that the society will remain in harmony with government and public having the same target.
