Print sales have been declining for several years, the only way print media survive was make a digital transformation, says an experienced journalist.

“Print media may no longer exist in three to years,” said Eva Lee Tsz-fan, the manager of the content bureau of corporate affairs of Alibaba Group, and also an experienced reporter.

Lee said that many print media have been already set up a online version of newspaper nowadays, such as setting up instant columns, shooting news videos.

“Embracing new things is necessary if print media have to survive.” Lee said.

Lee said the applications of Virtual Reality (VR) technology and Augmented Reality (AR) technology could help print media companies to create news stories in the future.

Lee added that although print media must do the transformation to survive but it was not necessarily successful.

“The readers of online media was subdivided and the content was fragmented. Even if the print media changed the communication way to readers, the company also should figure out how to attract reader’s interest and how to convey the message to readers.” Lee said.

Some people worried about professional journalists would be replaced by citizen journalists, Lee said professional journalists would not be replaced.

“People know how to take videos and photos but they do not know how to separate fact from opinion and they are not able to do the insight and analysis of the news,” Lee said.

“Also, normal people didn’t know the media ethics, and it is important,” Lee said.

Some people said that the disadvantage of online media is the lack of credibility, Lee did not agree that online media was completely untrustworthy.

“Some online media were transform from traditional media. I believed that they have deep-rooted traditional principles about reporting news,” Lee said.
