Spokesperson of Alliance for True Democracy defended that he was approved by the Union to meet Taiwan’s former DPP chairman individually last Saturday.

Previously, Hong Kong Economic Times reported that the Union decided not to meet Shih Ming-the after an internal conference held last Wednesday. But Joseph Yu-shek Cheng flew to Taiwan and met Taiwan independence activists. He criticized that it was a false report as he had sought a consent from his members.

Pan-democratic parties which have contacts with foreign political organizations or politicians is often seen as a collusion with foreign forces. Cheng argued, “The Central Government received help from USSR, so does this count as a collusion with foreign forces?” He added that the Central Government had no rights to judge pan-democratic parties as they previously had contacts with foreign countries too.

Also, Cheng refused that he lacked political sense. He admitted that he wanted to put pressure on Beijing through visiting Taiwan. “It is a matter of self-dignity and freedom,” said Cheng. He said it was impossible to have democracy if everyone acted to please the Central Government. Moreover, he did not agree that Beijing had the rights to restrict who to meet.

Cheng said one of the obstacles of Hong Kong moving towards democracy was that most of the citizens supported democracy but just a few of them would take actions or were willing to sacrifice. He claimed that he would take part in the movement “Occupy Central” individually and would not mind sacrificing for democracy. There would be a risk of being arrested if participating in the movement. “I do,” said Cheng, firmly. He added that he was mentally prepared for an arrest.

Cheng hoped that students would come and support the movement. Yet he warned that students and teenagers should not get arrested intentionally if the police force took actions, for example, a clearance.
