Recently, many people talk about the free TV license. Some companies oppose the government to distribute three free TV license. Their reason is that it will cause vicious competition. However, Most of audience welcomes to have more choice. Mr Wong is the chairperson of Communications Authority Broadcast Codes of Practice Committee. He has his own opinion on this issue.

The Communications Authority’s rights

He memorized that there were two organizations to regulate the aspects, such as TV, radio and cell phones providers. From this year of April, the two organizations combine to be Communications Authority. From July last year, the organization which in charge of free TV license, have already advised chief executive and executive council to distribute three free TV license. Now, the new organization has installed. The Communications Authority has recommended again. However, the government did not take any action. Raymond Wong said ‘We don’t have the rights to distribute free TV license. We just have the rights to recommend.’

Government did not guarantee anything

On the other hand, the two free TV license companies extremely oppose to distribute more free TV licenses. Raymond Wong thought that government did not guarantee anything. Hong Kong people should have more choice. No everybody could afford the high price to watch the pay TV. Government should take more action.

‘I understand, but I don’t agree.’

He explained his point in detail. In his point of view, Hong Kong is a free economy society. No matter they run the TV station or not. Government did not have any responsibility on this. So he understands why the two existing TV stations complain. However, he emphasis on that ‘I understand their reasons, but it does not mean I agree their arguments.’
