S. Alice Mong: Everyone Has the Duty to Protect Heritage

Mar 5th—Asia Society Hong Kong center's executive director, S. Alice Mong in her first public speech to a local university yesterday afternoon, said that the heritages are not just buildings, and people should bear the responsibility to protect them.

“The most important event nowadays is that few Asia people know the rise of Asia,” said Ms. Mong, “if the local people don’t know its own region’s history, art and heritage, then how can we take the step to protect?”

Ms. Mong said that the heritage is not about building that simple, it can also be living things.

“Trees, flowers can be heritage as well, which calls for our protection,” Ms. Mong said, “Hong Kong is the city with well greening, and it is worthy for us to preserve green heritage.”

As mentioned how a single person to preserve the heritage individually, Ms. Mong replied that the action is very simple.

“Just like what I have mentioned, heritage has various existences and meanings,” Ms. Mong said, she continued that “if you find there is a trash lying on the beach, pick it up and throw to the rubbish can, what you do is a behavior of preserving the heritage.”

Ms. Mong said her role is a balancing between the commercial entrance and protect mission repeatedly, she had the faith that government should play a role in preserving the heritage.
