Making good use of social networking sites can help cultivate a positive image of a country, said Scott Robinson, spokesman of the U.S. Consulate General.

Robinson claimed that many spokesmen of U.S Consulate has started to make good use of social networking sites to communicate with people in different regions, such as using Facebook or blogs to send out important messages.

With the advantages of social networking sites, such as the fast pace for sending or receiving messages and providing a platform for users uploading graphics and videos, Robinson pointed out that social networking sites can foster a vivid image of the consulate or even for a country.

“To keep our image being fresh and cordial, we need to update our sites frequently,” said Robinson.

Robinson mentioned that he uploaded a video to the consulate’s website and social networking sites during Chinese New Year to greet Hong Kong citizens, believing that will break the indifferent perception of the consulate.

Robinson also took Kristie Kenney, U.S. ambassador to Thailand’s social networking sites as an example. Kenney updates her status in Twitter in Thailand every day, showing her work and travel experiences in Thailand, also introducing celebration and festival of U.S., and recommend some U.S. idioms to Thailand residents.

“Kenney also uploads her personal and family photos to her twitter which makes the image of U.S. consulate becoming more approachable,” said Robinson.

Robinson noted that there may be some negative or offensive comments left by netizens from different regions in their websites, but Robinson suggested that ambassadors should not remove or hide those comments, since they are all the feedbacks from the people.

Robinson thought that a country should listen to both positive voices, while no censorship to the websites should be allowed, and the government should careful handle the feedbacks from people, in order to make better changes in her policies.
