Although specialized magazines do not have as large of a circulation as other print media, they still have stable revenue and a future in Hong Kong, said Jack Forest, editorial director of luxuries magazine Timesquare.

Forest noted that readers who are familiar with certain topics covered by specialized magazines, especially ones on luxury lifestyles, will consistently subscribe, ignoring the general effects of society.

“Unlike print media like Apple Daily or gossip magazines, specialized magazines will not be affected by the market fluctuation,” said Forest.

Forest admitted that the overall circulation of printing media in Hong Kong has fallen in recent years, but that will not worsen specialized magazines’ market.

Forest added that magazines in Hong Kong better not cooperate with media in other regions, such as Tai Wan and China, since culture and taste of readers are totally different in every place.

“Readers in different regions have dissimilar requirements, “said Forest.

He described that readers in China and Tai Wan are more familiar content with texts, need more details about the products, and it is very common to find magazines with two full pages of text, but Hong Kong readers love to read pictures, rather than texts, so it is not suitable to share contents in media in different districts.
