Steve Wallace: Hong Kong undergraduates have many errors in research papers.

Hong Kong’s undergraduates have made several common mistakes, which may in turn lower the overall quality of their academic papers. Dr. Steve Wallace, Chief Executive Officer of Wallace Academic Editing, has commented on Chinese students’ writing skills in English that they may transfer their research paper from Chinese to English, and hence they have caused a lot of errors.

He said in Shue Yan University yesterday that Asian students who are not native speakers may be less proficient in English and thus, they are less competitive when writing academic research papers.

“There are a lot of journals and research resources written in English. Researchers are eager to learn more English skills and vocabularies for absorbing these resources.”

He also thought that Hong Kong and mainland students in general are more aggressive and competitive but less shy and quiet than those in Taiwan. “When I first saw Taiwan students, I said Hello! And they said I am fine, thank you! ”

He used his own experience as an example to illustrate how Asian students use English in standardized ways, but may not be lively enough.

“Writing research paper is different with writing newspapers, “he added, “the style is different.”
