Most of the journals being published are written by foreign scholars. Steve Wallace, an expert in editing journals, suggested that poor English is the main reason of Chinese journal papers being rejected.

According to a survey mentioned by Wallace, there is 27% of journal papers of Taiwanese being rejected because of poor English. Wallace thought that the mother language of Chinese negatively affects the writing. "This may be because of (Chinese people) translating Chinese into English." said Wallace. He said once the editor saw the English errors appear on the journal, they would consider the author as a careless person. Thus the editor would wonder if there are any mistakes which related to the research. Therefore, the editor would rather reject the journal papers.

Wallace suggested that using simple English in journal papers is the best way and the most effective way to avoid being rejected. He said "You are not impress the referees, but express the idea." Therefore, he suggested that writing in active voice helps articulating the ideas in writing journals.

Steve Wallace is the founder of Wallace Academic Editing which is a consultant agency on academic journal paper. Also, he is responsible for teaching students in writing journal in several universities including Tainghua University and National Chiao Tung University.
