It was very hard for teenagers to upward their social mobility nowadays. Even though the government have provide many financial resources, they still couldn’t solve the radical poverty problems.

“Government subsidies only solve the poverty problems superficially not radically,” Alvin Cheung, the Senior Researcher of Our Hong Kong Foundation said at a Hong Kong Shue Yan University forum yesterday. The Chief Executive’s 2018 Policy Address has announced the policy of providing billion dollar to Youth Development Commission as to provide resources for teenagers to develop. “The radical problems that affect teenagers upward social mobility are education resources, property price and disparity between rich and the poor,” he said. Government should solve these radical problems in the first priority, not just giving money to teenagers.

“Working for high salaries but not interest is not worth consideration,” he said. Fresh graduation students always confused on choosing a job with high salaries or a job matched with their interest. “What do you want to do in 10 years later?” he said. If the students chose to have a job with high salaries at first, it would be very hard to change their job in the future. They wouldn’t have that much time start their career path all over again.

“Government need to solve the social problems start from social planning,” he said. Government should provide financial subsidies in a better planning, rather than giving money directly to the public, government should provide more resources to medical service such as the resources for elderly to get vaccinated.

Alvin Cheung is the Senior Researcher of Our Hong Kong Foundation mainly focus on the research of Social Impact Assessment applying to public policy and business decision. He is also the writer of “Social Innovation-Policy Research Series”.--165054 2019年1月29日 (二) 17:49 (CST)
