Tai: Basic Law should address to citizens’ expectation

The founder of “Occupy Centre” Tai Yiu Ting said the Basic Law is a “living instrument”, which means the movement could be changed to response to the need of society and the expectation of citizens.

Tai said the Hong Kong is now in a constitutional moment, during which Hong Kong citizens should stand out and joint together to put pressure to the political leaders inside the constitution in order to achieve the goal of fair and equal universal suffrage. He added, unlike other countries, it is possible to achieve the goal without bleeding in Hong Kong, however, Hong Kong still need to pay for democracy.

He said “Occupy Centre” is one of the chips to narrow the difference between Centre government and Hong Kong. He didn’t worry about “Occupy Centre” will split up Hong Kong, but the opposite. Because when both sides realize continuing conflict will eventually lead to a “lose-lose situation”, both sides will be willing to sit down and negotiate, and finally reach the consensus.
