Tempting Mainland monthlies market remains uncertain

By Tam Yat Pang

Dec. 18 Managing Director of MRRM Publishing Ltd., Mabel Leung said Hong Kong monthlies market was shrinking. However, she would not start her business in Mainland even the market there was tempting.

“The cost of publishing monthlies is very high, because the in-depth stories contents are mostly related to luxuries like cars, watches, fashion and gadgets. Also, we have only about 30 thousand of circulation, we cannot gained any profit from the book price,” Leung said.

However, Leung said monthlies could more easily to reach target readers and that made advertisers were willing to put their advertisements there. She added, “quality of readers” were more important than “the quantity”.

“Although monthlies do not have a large circulation, our readers are group of affluent young men with great spending power. They may not have spent money on housing or giving money to their parents, they have a strong consumption power. This can already attracted advertisers of luxury goods to place their advertisement in monthlies,” Leung added.

Leung said Hong Kong monthlies were losing ground because readers were more interested in “instant food” like weekly magazines. Though Mainland has a great market potential, she would not start monthlies business there.

“China market is really tempting, but I do not have absolute confidence to work there. Contract agreements and regulations are totally different from Hong Kong, the publications may not be able to print for no reason even all the problems and agreements have been settled,” Leung said.
