'''David Schlesinger, the chairman of Thomson Reuters China, shared the keys of being successful in journalism during his speech at Shue Yan University today and said, “When I was editor in chief of Reuters, several of my top people never went to a university at all.”''' [This implies the article will be about how college is not necessary for a succesful career in journalism] '''Joe Ng''' The news platform is now shifting from traditional media to the internet. Journalists have to compete with the internet users. David believes that journalists have to add value to their reports, so that the consumers will pay for it. David said that without receivers, a journalist is nothing. Journalists serve the customers, producing something fitting their needs. “Excellent work is what customers want,” he said. To do qualified reports, David shared that he always thought about himself as a freelance reporter, whose life depends on each piece of work, [being strived if no buyer - no idea what this means]. In order to add value to the reports, David thinks that a journalist should develop their own niche, concentrating in an area and becoming the expert of that area [Great exposition]. That can let the journalist to provide facts that other do not know. The other values are “speed”, “style” and “ubiquity”, being everywhere. David said that a journalist could not be lazy. A journalist should go out to develop the sources and seek the dramas inside people stories. Journalists cannot do their reports based on imagination. They observe and ask questions; do interviews and investigations to seek the answers. However, before adding value to the reports, accuracy is fundamental and the most important. “Check before being too late,” said David. Competing with the time and maintaining the accuracy at the same time, he thinks this is an experiential process. If a mistake is made, correct it instantly, openly and clearly. For more, learn from it. [A great article on how to be a good journalist, though the headline is misleading.] [Grade: B]
