The West Kowloon Cultural District should be planned again to incorporate underground cities, said Cheung Kwok Pun, associate professor in architecture at The University of Hong Kong.

Cheung explained that building an underground city of 5 storeys needs 350 million Hong Kong dollars, but he believed that it is easy to break even for the building, with adding commercial element into the district.

Cheung noted that the building of underground city can divided into inland underground city and reclamation underground city, and the development of the West Kowloon Cultural District belongs to the latter.

Cheung said that because the district is categorized as the reclamation landing, there are no big rocks in the underground, so there will be an open area for the underground cities, as long as the debris poured into the construction of retaining walls, the site will release large land for use.

“The underground cities can establish a water-cooled refrigeration system to adjust the temperature of the indoor, to achieve energy efficiency,” said Cheung.

Cheung suggested that the construction of the underground cities can introduce variety of stores or museum, which will create a new landmark in Hong Kong, with the development of high-speed rail to boost Hong Kong tourism, in the long run, the district will bring more economic benefits for Hong Kong.

He also said that the underground cities can also develop renewable energy center to support the sustainable development of energy.
