New service to be next big thing, says veteran TV producer

Asia Television Limited has launched its over-the-top (OTT) services platform, which many people describe as the resurrection of ATV and a veteran producer believes it is the next trend.

Jacky Chan To-on, who is now a radio host at URadio and RTHK, said the OTT platform would become the trend in the next few years.

OTT is a media distribution practice that allows a streaming content provider to sell audio, video, and other media services directly to the consumer over the internet via streaming media as a standalone product.

“You cannot force a person to stay at home to watch TV,” said Chan at a Hong Kong Shue Yan University forum.

He also said paid-subscriptions served as value-added services in the TV industry.

Chan has worked at several corporations in the past decade, including Metro Radio, ATV, Phoenix Television, Pok Oi Hospital and Po Leung Kuk.

As an experienced journalist, Chan often gives public lectures for educational purposes to teach students communication and public relation skills.

“Pin Xiang Fan Dian” is a novel written by Chan, and East Asia Music (Holdings) Limited bought the rights to produce it into a stage play. “Pin Xiang Fan Dian” was also adapted by RTHK into a broadcast drama.

Chan, who has been behind many TV shows and written novels, commented on the dramas on the internet.

“Any topic or any theme can be shown on the internet,” said Chan.

The production of a drama needs the tolerance of an audience and Chan suggested that the themes in local programming should be bolder and fully reflect human nature.

Chan also compared Hong Kong with South Korean shows.

The reason for the popularity of Korea dramas was because the government and the whole nation willing to support the TV industry, but Hong Kong only supported a specific corporation, he said.

Korean scriptwriters were able to rewrite the script to cater for product placement, while Chan said the TV industry relied on advertising revenue.
