The director has experienced countless bitterness and unknowns during creation, says a local filmmaker.

The work of directors, screenwriters, etc, seems to have a bright future, but there have been countless bitterness behind the achievements, says Au Man Kit, Jevons, a local filmmaker.

“The preparation time and the launching of film "Ten Years” lasted two years. After the film was released, it successfully caught the attention of the public. However, it was forced to go down because of the wrong theme. All the film workers involved only had one year's salary, which shows that the film pay is too low to estimate,” said Au at a Hong Kong Shue Yan University weekly forum.

He pointed out that in recent years, the box office of Hong Kong movies had gone from bad to worse, and many movies had earned less than 10 million. It was believed that the local film industry was too restrictive and did not want to spend large-scale production, so that Hong Kong films continued to falter and could not rush overseas. He said that Hong Kong films also had a certain market abroad, and this encouraged local directors to spend more on filming.

As a local filmmaker, Au did not want to change his direction and creation due to policy or review systems. Although funds were available for screening in the Mainland, the process must be reviewed by the Mainland’s Central Propaganda Department, which meant that the content of the film should be adjusted accordingly.

He said that he had refused nearly 50 million pieces of work. "Because I don't know the taste of the mainlanders, and I feel that my style is different from the mainland.”

Au was still optimistic about Hong Kong films. He also hoped that Hong Kong will produce more short films, and more people will support, respect and invest in short films.

Au Man Kit was graduated from the Director of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2004. His works including “Ten Years”, “Trivisa”, “Distinction”, etc. Now he is a consultant director of Next Digital Incubation.
