There should not be “Hong Kong film”, said Wong Jing.

Reported by Alvin Wu

Cultural conflicts between Hong Kong and China has spread out to film industry. Wong Jing, an experienced director for local movies, thought that there should not be any rigid definition of Hong Kong films, but Chinese films instead. He thought that “films with Hong Kong characteristics” had vanished since 1980s.

“Hong Kong people have gradually accepted co-production films,” he expressed in Shue Yan University yesterday, “Hong Kong films are not only made for Hong Kong people.”

Wong explained that mainland market has a great potential with large amount of audiences, and hence, many filmmakers are attracted to cooperate with mainland film companies and produce films under such environment.

“If you want to enter others’ market, you should follow their rules and traditions, even if it is nose-picking.” He thought.

Despite that, some other filmmakers want to make films for Hong Kong people only, without concerning mainland market. Fruit Chan, an independent director, has claimed not to let his new film to be shown on screen in mainland recently.

“If I were him (Fruit Chan), I won’t do that.” Wong responded.
