VR might be used not only entertainment but also journalism, says an experienced VR expert.

“Reporters could use VR technology to bring audiences closer to the story,” said Chainly Sze, a founder and Chairman of Hong Kong Virtual Reality Network.

Sze is a professional trainer on Black Magic Design, including Da Vinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, CS6 and much other software for movie post-production.

Sze said that ‘Project Syria’ was an immersive journalism piece which made a huge impact. “ ‘Project Syria’ used VR technologies and 360-degree video to immerse audiences in, and convey the plight of the child refugees in Syria and put the audience “on scene”,”said Sze.

An American journalist did research before and she found that people are quite affected by the VR experience, and they’re willing to help after watching and feeling video.

“When the US retired soldiers watched the short video of ‘Project Syria’, they were moved and felt pity.” said Sze.

“VR was a new tool for journalists, like that the case of ‘Project Syria’. The Immersive experience could provide people with not only the information, but also the details of scenes happened back then,” said Sze.

Sze opposed people said that VR technology would affect the persuasiveness and truthfulness of the news stories.

“Traditional news reports only consisted of just the written words and photographs, but how “truthful” these photographs actually were is questionable,” said Sze. “Also, they were difficult to attract audiences.”

Although VR technology could be powerful for storytellers, since it forced the viewers to be engaged, Sze said VR technology must be used with caution.

“News reporters should use VR technology carefully as it affects powerfully upon audiences’ emotions,” Sze said.
