The idea of W.E.D. (writing, editing and design) will be adapted by more and more publishers, especially the newspaper industry in the future, as brilliant graphic design for publishers can enrich the news reporting and attract more readers and may increase circulation, said Danny Wong, art director of Sing Tao Group.

Worked for Apple Daily before, and now response to the art and graphic design for the publication of the Sing Tao Group, such as paid news paper Sing Tao Daily and free news paper Hong Kong Headline, Wong noted that the operation of news paper will no longer independent, which reporters need to communicate more with the art department.

“In fact we need to cater the needs of nowadays readers, while they have not much time to digest too many words,” said Wong.

Wong took Sing Tao Group as an example, pointing out that reporters will discuss the topics which going to be covered with the graphic design department. The department will ask more details about the story, such as the coverage and the publishing days,

Then the department will require the reporters to take some related photos relating the story and the graphic design. Wong noted that the communication helps a lot while requiring them take some certain photos.

“As the Canton old saying goes “It’s hard for a magician to play magic without tools,” So we need tools and props to make out design too,” said Wong.

Wong mentioned the design about report of resigning trend of CID, which was rewarded by Newspaper Association, claiming that was a good result of communication between reporters and the art department.

Wong noted that a survey conducted by Sing Tao Group revealed that most of the readers in Hong Kong seldom digest every reporting in newspaper. Some of them can only spend around one minute on each of the news story.

He added that most of the readers usually read the headline and the lead of the story. Rich color and brilliant graphic design could help to attract and enrich the news stories.
