Waste disposal policy has come to a dead end, says Bernard Chan

Hong Kong’s waste disposal policy is facing a dilemma. Bernard Chan, the Chairman of the Council for Sustainable Development, said that even when most of the people have agreed to charge for the wastes, there are disputes in how to charge it.

“More and more Hong Kong people have agreed to charge waste, “Chan said in Shue Yan University yesterday, “it is mainly because the problem has become stringent.”

Chan thought that there is more likely to charge household disposal by measuring the amount of waste. Every household would need to buy certain waste bags, and they need to use those bags for waste disposal. Purchasing waste bags become a form of paying the charges.

“The waste disposal policy has come to a dead end, “Chan said, “Most of the landfills are going to be full, if we want to build more landfills, residents in proposed location would oppose to that.”

Capacity of landfills is decreasing every day, which is the main reason to forge the policy in a short period of time.

“Even if new facilities can be built, it may need at least 8 years for building it.” Chan estimated.
