With the rapid development of Internet, there are more channels appeared for news released these years. Within these channels, Chan Suk Mei, Chief inspector of News and Public Affairs of Commercial Radio, said that Weibo has brought many changes to journalism.

Chan attended a seminar held by Department of Journalism and Communication of Hong Kong Shue Yan University and Department of Communication of University of Macau. In the seminar, she said that she had stick to Weibo as it provides news rapidly, continuously and with personal characteristics, which changes the definition of reporters in journalism.

She compared Weibo with different forms of news reporting. She said that she could receive the immediate news through Weibo quickly after any incident had happened. However, news on television and radio are reported after several hours. News on printed media is released on the next day. She said that with the use of Weibo, she can get the basic information immediately when some others report it actively, which other forms of media are not able to release news in such speed.

Apart from that, she said that some of the news released in Weibo is full of characteristics. She took the incident of Occupy Wall Street as an example. She said there is a Chinese student studying in America took lots of photo of the incident and upload them onto Weibo. She said that those posts made by him are full of personality as he had added his view as well through Weibo. As the photos taken by him are focus on different kinds of participators rather than simply on people protesting, they are more able to show the detail of incident like the demand and anticipation of participators. The information released by him has no effect on the quality of news but provide news with more personality.

Apart from that, Weibo provides news with continuality. Different from other forms of media, she said, Weibo allows people to follow certain news in a long period of time. For example, there is a person keep on releasing the political situation of Libya through Weibo. With following his posts, people are able to know the latest political status of Libya. She added that the number of followers is similar to the circulation of newspapers, which means a personal Weibo is acting like a news agency.

She said that with these characteristics of Weibo, it is able to have a more powerful influence than traditional news media. She added that Weibo has also give a chance for the general public to release news around them that reporter is not just limited to people working in journalism, but everyone who is willing to do so.
